5 Facts About WrinklesWrinkles have always been associated with aging. Although this notion might be true for most cases, it isn’t entirely true for all of them. Women, in particular, do not like getting wrinkles. Men do not mind them that much but still, most people try to find their ways around these lines that may or may not signify a ‘distinguished life’. There are some wrinkles facts that will astound you just as much as there are some that will make you wonder if there is anything you could have done differently to prevent them from ever occurring.

There are two types of wrinkles

The very first thing people need to realize is that there are two types of wrinkles. That should be followed closely by the fact that you cannot completely avoid wrinkles, no matter how hard you try. You can only delay or minimize their onset. The two types of wrinkles are static and dynamic. Static wrinkles are the type of wrinkles that occur due to the kind of life we have lived, or due to hereditary factors that pre-dispose us to getting wrinkles. They are also brought about by environmental factors, lifestyle habits and our natural aging process. Dynamic wrinkles on the other hand come about as a result of prolonged repeated muscle movements. A good example of dynamic wrinkles are worry lines that people get from frowning too often, or smile lines that people get at the corner of their mouths for smiling for too long. That being said, there are other mitigating factors that affect the kind and degree of wrinkles that we get.

What smoking has to do with wrinkles

woman smokesEvery smoker knows that smoking is not only bad for their health but it is also terrible for their skin. What many do not know, is how and why smoking affects their skin and thus bring about wrinkling. Smoking affects your skin in three tiers. First, it stifles the amount of oxygen your blood gets. This oxygen is essential for your skin to stay healthy. The second part is that it reeks havoc on your blood vessels. By constricting these vessels, smoking essentially limits the amount of already ‘de-oxygenated’ blood that gets to your cells. Thirdly, smoking introduces a host of harmful chemicals into your blood stream. These chemicals attack the proteins which are responsible for keeping your skin healthy. What all this leads to is saggy skin which is devoid of moisture.

What stress has to do with wrinkles

Although you might not realize it, but worrying does a great deal of harm to your skin. We have all heard people talk about ‘worry lines’ or ‘frown lines’. This is all due to stress. We grimace a great deal when we are worried and this repetitive action causes dynamic wrinkles that make us look much older than we may actually be. It is therefore crucial that we learn how to manage stress. If not for the sake of our faces, then maybe for the sake of our health.

What the sun has to do with wrinkles

Many people know that being in direct sunlight is harmful to their health. But their main concern is often cancer. This frequent sun exposure is also extremely detrimental to your skin as well. The rule of thumb should be that every time you are out in the sun, you should always have protection on. Either wear protective clothing or apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen that has an SPF of 15. To prevent wrinkles, you should make your diet a priority. Ensure that you follow a healthy diet and that you drink lots of water. Staying out of the sun, at least without protection is also a very good way to go. Try as much as you can to avoid junk food and minimize your sugar intake. With just a little extra care, you can actually keep wrinkles at bay. But this does not mean that you will never get them. Wrinkles are a natural aging process that every single one of us will experience in our lives.
